The Impact of Open Source Software on the Strategic Choices of Firms Developing Proprietary Software

چکیده
Eric See-To Department of Management Science Lancaster University Management School Open source software (OSS) is now posing significant competition to proprietary or closed source software (CSS) in several software markets. In this paper, we characterize the response of a firm developing CSS to the presence of an OSS in its market. In particular, we look at the firm's choice of resource investments to improve quality and the firm's pricing decisions. We are primarly motivated by the following questions: Would a firm producing CSS produce higher-quality software when it faces competition from an OSS than when there is no OSS in its market? Would there be a change in the firm's response if the CSS faced competition from another CSS in addition to competition from the OSS? We show that the firm produces lower-quality CSS when it faces competition from an OSS than when it does not. Also, the quality of the CSS decreases as the quality of the OSS increases. This result holds true even if we consider network effects. When we consider competition from another CSS, in addition to competition from the OSS, then the quality of the CSS could increase or decrease as the quality of the OSS increases. The change in quality depends on how closely substitutable the two CSS are. We also extend our base model to consider: i) competition for resources, ii) uncertainty in resources available to the OSS, and iii) uncertainty about the software development process.

Competition and Compatibility with Open Source Software
We use Hotelling’s linear city model to study asymmetric competition between open source and proprietary software, where only one party the proprietary software producer aims at maximizing the profit. We focus on the different compatibility choices of the proprietary software, which lead to different network externality, and thus result in different profit for proprietary software producers. It...
متن کاملFirms as Incubators of Open-Source Software
Many successful open source projects have been developed by programmers who were employed by firms but worked on the open source projects on the side due to economic incentives like career improvement benefits. Such side work may be a good thing for the employing firms too if they get some strategic value from the open source software and/ or if the productivity of the programmers on these proj...
متن کاملMixed Source
We study competitive interaction between profit-maximizing firms that sell software and complementary goods or services. Firms choose between three business models: the proprietary model, the open source model, and the mixed source model. When a firm opens part of its software, users can access and improve the source code, which increases quality and value creation, but at the same time, it set...
متن کاملFirms' contribution to open source software and the dominant user's skill
Free, libre or open source software (FLOSS) is nowadays produced not only by individual benevolent developers but, in a growing proportion, by firms that hire programmers for their own objectives of development in open source or for contributing to open source projects in the context of dedicated communities. A recent literature has focused on the question of the business models explaining how ...
متن کاملOpen Source, Dual Licensing and Software Competition
To distribute software, commercial firms have the opportunity to use some dual licensing strategy i.e. to provide their software under two different licensing terms (proprietary and open source). In this paper, we investigate the relevance and impacts of such distribution strategy in the presence of an already existing open source software. In this competitive setting, we determine in which con...
